Title
John Hilton, Albany, New York State, to his parents, Garvagh, County Derry, 16 April 1812
Description
He had spent the winter about 20 miles from Albany. He had brought goods north fr om New York City and had sold them all. He was now offered 181 per month to work in an iron monger's store in Albany. He reported that farm workers could get f rom $10-$12 per month and found in the area. Due to the Embargo, trade was very bad at the present, there was a surplus of wheat in the hands of the merchants, and he expected that many farmers would lose their lands. Land for farming sold from 18 to 20$ per acre in his area, altho to the westward it was from 2-5$ per acre. War had broken out between the US and Britain, and "the are Enlisting Soldiers and drawing Milittia and Sending troops to the Lines of Canadia I would wish to know if you have any account of your Land or if you have purchased any Land, if you purchase perpituity Land I intend to return to Ireland."
