Rowntree/ Roantree Letters
Title
Daniel Rowntree, Washington, D.C., to his sister, Mrs. M. Butler, c/o his brother, Lawrence Rowntree, Carlisle Coal Stores, No. 22 Townsend Street, Dublin, 5 May 1851
Description
Part of the family was already in the US. Daniel had expected his sister in America to aid their sisters in Ireland, but she had not yet sent him any money to forward. "I send you a check for 70 Dollars which is all I could possibly send this I think will be required for your passage alone. If you can by any Means get as much as will buy your provisions I will send that amount by the time of your arrivil. You will require very little, as you will be furnished with an allowance of provisions from the Captain." Hopes that their brother Laurence will be able to accompany them to Liverpool - "I fear that it will be difficult for you to manage otherwise." To the wife of a friend, he sends his respects - "if it were possible they was here, would be no difficulty in doing well for her children, yet I will not encourage her or any of my friends to come here so long as they can possibly live home." "...I conclude by sending ye all my love and sincere affection wishing if it be the will of providence that the few of our family that are yet living can soon enjoy the society of each other in this country as there is no likeligood of any of us returning to the land of Our Birth."
