Reverend William Stavely Letters
Title
Ann Adams, Mill Creek, South Carolina, to Rev. William J. Stavely, Corkey, Loughguile parish, ca. Ballymoney, County Antrim, 8 February 1819
Description
Very interesting and by far the best letter in this collection. Excellent and often lengthy remarks on: school-teaching (she and Mary Adams both have "good schools" and incomes of $250 per an .); family distress, disease (her mother has died of yellow fever), the difficulties of maintaining Covenanting Presbyterian worship in America, the pros and cons of slave holding, and her homesickness for Ireland. She notes that Covenanters are disliked as much in South Carolina as in north Antrim, and that their testimony against slavery makes life difficult for them. She would prefer to return home to Ireland than live in the US, but she admits that in the US there were "no tyrants."
