McLeod was the minister of the Reformed (Covenanter) Presbyterian Church in New York City. Describes conflicts within the Church, especially in Pittsburgh, between the authority of Presbytery (which McLeod supports) and trouble-making or defiant clergy, recently arrived from Ireland, and their allies among church elders. [William J. Stavely lives in Ballyboyland(s), Ballymoney as per his letter of 9 February 1851 in the William Stavely Letters series].
