Padraig Cundun, Deerfield, near Utica, Oneida County, New York, to Tomas O Briain, [Moin Choiteann/ Mountcotton], Baile Macoda parish, County Cork, 27 May 1848
Description
Letter elaborates on American superiority over Ireland and its "merciless landlords." Cundun begs for news of this year's potato crops, which he fears have failed again. He laments Irish suffering during the Famine as well as the loss of many of his poems, which he burned on his departure from Ireland. He hopes that Ireland's tyrannical landlords will experience God's wrathful judgement. Stanzas of poems are interspersed with text. [Letter transcript shows the original text in Irish, alongside an English translation.]
