Anstis-Eady-Huston Letters
Title
James Huston, Ballinadee, County Cork, to his uncle, Robert Eedy, [St. Peters, Bay de Chaleur, New Brunswick], 29 July 1827
Description
Huston is now employed as a schoolmaster by an evangelical Protestant society, the Dublin Association for Discountenancing Vice, which was one of the many institutional expressions of the evangelical crusade, known as the "New Reformation," to convert Irish Catholics to loyal Protestantism. Huston gives detailed descriptions of the economic distress, social unrest, and increasing emigration in southern Ireland. Much of the letter concerns what Huston views as frightening or portentous developments in Ireland (O'Connell's campaign for Catholic Emancipation) and abroad, balanced by reports of mass conversions of Irish and French Catholics to Protestantism, leading him to predict that Biblical prophecies were being fulfilled, the "End Times" were nigh, and the "Dominion of Babylon" was coming to a close .
