McHenry-Moore Letters
Title
David Moore, Society Hill, Union Factory, Darlington Co., South Carolina, to his brother, Thomas Moore, c/o "Henry Gaither, Watchmaker," Georgetown, D.C., 5 November 1817
Description
David Moore is now managing a Southern cotton factory, during the brief heyday of Southern industrialization before the Panic of 1819. Moore's cotton factory was a pioneering but an extensive concern, owned partly by former US general and South Carolina governor and congressman, David Rogerson Williams. Letter illustrates the migration of Irish industrial expertise to the comparatively "underdeveloped" US economy, and Moore describes cotton manufacturing, socioeconomic conditions, and slavery in upland South Carolina. Mentions various kinsmen in South Carolina, including his brother, John, who had emigrated previously. Urges Thomas to join him.
