McHenry-Moore Letters
Title
James McHenry, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania, to Thomas Moore, Baltimore, Maryland, 5 May 1817
Description
McHenry laments Ireland's economic misery, which ultimately he blames on British political oppression. Reflecting the continued influence of the United Irishmen's ideals, McHenry half-hopes for revolution and despises the British Government. His letters refers in positive terms to William Orr and other executed 1798 rebels in Ulster. McHenry is waiting for his wife and family's arrival at (he assumes) Philadelphia. He is now less positive about Orwigsburg, and, after their arrival, he expects to move and settle in the West or South of the United States.
