McHenry-Moore Letters
Title
John Lough, Larne town (and parish), Glenarm Upper barony, County Antrim, to his brother-in-law, Thomas Moore, Baltimore, Maryland, 8 February 1817
Description
Lough and his partner appear to be struggling malt manufacturers. Excellent letter on the post-war economic depression and its effects on Ireland-including its direct stimulus to Ulster emigration. Letter provides detailed information about Irish business failures; debtors fleeting to America to escape their creditors and possible imprisonment for debt; the sharp decline in the values of Irish land, farms, and tenant-right. Lough reports that his benevolent landlady has granted rent abatements; charity, and, with other gentry, has subscribed to charities for the poor. Those who can afford emigration do so, but many more would go if they had the means. Lough himself wants advice as to whether he should emigrate.
