Title
Letter from Joe Cleary, New York, to his father, Thomas B. Cleary, Athenry
Description
Letter from Joe Cleary, New York, to his father, Thomas B. Cleary, Athenry, dated 10 Sept. 1920. Refers to the violence of the Crown Forces in Galway town that broke out on 8 Sept: ‘It makes one feel ashamed of himself when he is not there. I hope ye are keeping cool or rather playing a cool hand.’ ‘The times are pretty tough with ye and the situation is getting more critical. Let us hope for the best.’ Discusses the labour situation in New York and prohibition, ‘every house is becoming a brewery... But money is the thing and beer and there is little money and no beer’. ‘It is hard to win them with so many scabs and police it is rotten. Money, money, money, it will buy anything here.’
