Griffith Letter
Title
Mattie Griffith, New York City, to Mary Estlin, England, 27 July 1863
Description
[Nativist's letter describing Irish immigrants in the Draft Riots in New York City, July 1863]. The author details the actions of the "barbaric" Irish mob which took over the city for four days, triggered by conscription, but which she instead claims was done in sympathy with the confederate cause in the Civil War. Griffithrelates the terrible abuse the negroes suffered at the hands of the mob, in connivance with the state Governor who had sent his troops out of the city. [The abolitionist Mary Anne Estlin lived in Bristol and the letter is likely addressed there].
