Robinson Letters
Title
William Robinson, Milwaukee, U.S.A., to William Jeffares, Wexford, Ireland, 7 October 1849
Description
William Robinson replies to his friend Willie Jaffares relating news of his wide travels in America since he left him last, which he praises as a brave country but for the Dutch, who arrive in flocks by steamboat and (he claims) are despised by Americans as "dirty! Stupid! Lazy!" and not really white. He is sorry to relate that some Irish are mean like them. He gives news of the development of telegraphs and local newspapers in a 'free country" and laments that Ireland "is gone". He notes with surprise the amount of immigrants now arriving in Milwaukee from "all parts of the world", with more territories soon opening up further west and he gives his thoughts on the new settlements and settlers.
