Brown Brothers Letters
Title
Samuel Brown. Philadelphia, to brother, David Brown, Mill St., Belfast, 23 December 1793
Description
Reports on his passage: 8+ weeks. Apologises for not writing sooner, but "the times hav been So very Disagreeable sins I Came hear". Landed at New Castle because of the raging yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Names all the Ulster-born artisans in Philadelphia who died of the fever. Opened a shop, but went to work for an employer so to be sure of weekly income, in case the fever returned and they moved to New York. (" We" included shipmates Thomas Stewart and Thomas Smyth.) Gives detailed information about the glazing trade and work in Philadelphia. Ulstermen appear more skilled than the locals. Wages good, but food costs are high. Friends are artisans in Baltimore. [Brown also reported that while he was content there, many wished to return to Ireland].
