Gibson Letters
Title
Andrew Gibson, Lisnagirr [parish of Cappagh, County Tyrone] to Robert Love [near Gastonia, North Carolina], 22 September 1789
Description
Gibson writes that his son John is now working as a teacher (with £100 a year) and living within five miles of New York on Long Island. He laments that unlike them, Love lives a blessed life "in a Land of Liberty and free from the great oppression of Landlords & everyone in authority". The last few seasons with losses of cattle, great floods and high taxes on landholders discourage Gibson greatly and he would join the young people "foldly" going to America, but he is too old "to undertake the [danger]". He concludes that John had a bad opinion of the country when he lived in Delaware his first year until the "Messrs Burnside", clerks at the Congress, brought him to New York, where all he needs now to be happy are Irish friends. [According to the PRONI catalogue (ref no. T3610), Robert Love was Andrew Gibson's half-brother].
