Title
Michael Callahan [St. Paul, Minnesota] to brother in New York (?), 20 September 1852
Description
Michael Callahan writes to his brother in need of money, or his recent purchase of a site for a house in town will fall through. He had intended to take advantage of high rents by building a house and renting it out, while he lived on his claim a few miles out of town. He states that while the country is quite virgin of farming, the land is the best he has seen in America for it. He advises his brother on how to travel to him that autumn via Chicago and Galena, if he so chooses, but warns of their long and hard winter which will close the (Mississippi) river early. He also mentions that whiskey is common among working men in Galena. [Note that the letter is poorly written].
