Thomas Reilly Letters
Title
Thomas Reilly, Dublin, to John M. Kelly, Dublin, no date (184(6?))
Description
[This first part of this letter is missing according to the transcriber]. Reilly laments his lot "and may be I will die in the accursed land [Ireland]" and imagines himself living adventures in America or New Zealand. He relates that he intends to emigrate to Australia when the vessel is ready (in two months at least) as his people in America would not pay his passage there — though which he preferred. He "has taken an utter dislike to politics and politicians" in Ireland and sees Catholic Emancipation as only conferring religious freedom and not true emancipation. He despises his race "a discontented, sinful, opprobius race, a disgrace to human nature a paltry brood that cannot unite for once or agree upon any point to save ourselves'. He thus questions the "effects of O'Connell's teaching".
