John Kirwan, New York, letter published in the Kilkenny Journal, 1 December 1875
Description
Alarmed at the large numbers arriving into America, John Kirwan, an offical at Mutual Gaslight Co. in New York city, is writing via the Kilkenny Journal, warning would-be emigrants against relocating to the city due to the endemic unemployment among Irish emigrants there. He claims that corruption in business and unemployment has seen many Irish reduced to poverty and begging even after years of toil, who would return home to Ireland if they had the means.
