Greene-Norris Letters
Title
James (Norris/Greene?), Christian Brother, on board the 'Beaver Line of Steamers', Lake (Simcoe?), to his cousin, Mary Norris, Dungarven, County Waterford, August 1902
Description
Author is James Norris, since he sends his thanks home to another James — "the best of Norris people on this side of the family". He expresses his ache in recently parting with his cousin Mary Norris and of being away from home in general. He expresses his affection for their times together and sends his regards home. During the voyage, he mentions that he took part with other upper deck passengers in games of fun, including throwing copper coins to 500 Jews in steerage, who fought over them — whom Norris heavily disparages. [Note that the letter was clearly composed during the sea voyage from Liverpool, en route to Montréal. Lake Simcoe was actually a ship on the Beaver Line of Steamers and not an address. Not all the letter has been transcribed as per several marginal notes]. James Norris uses the Irish language phrase transliterated as "Oh that it were you, Maire coleen dhas, that walked in".
