M. [Mary] Cox, Cloonhill, [Cloonlaughil, Mohill, Co. Leitrim], Ireland, to her brother, William Williamson, Watsonville, California, 20 October 1873
Description
Photocopied ms., not transcribed; no notes except the following. In an earlier letter, John Williamson reported that his sister Mary and her husband were in "Connaught," so this address may be Cloonskill, County Mayo. This is a very religious letter, and remarks about Methodists and about the importance of being "born again" suggest that her family may have been Methodists. She's glad to learn that William is prosperous, but wishes he and James had not settled in such a spiritually desolate part of America . She's worried about the social and spiritual status of William's neighbors. Reminiscences about their mother and how she prayed for her children's religious welfare. Her husband Thomas is at a fair in Longford. Their son, John William Cox, emigrated to Chicago about a year ago, opened a drugstore at 199 Desplain St., but was burned out in the Chicago Fire; still, he likes America. [Cloonhill is more likely the same as the local name for Cloonlaughil, Mohill, (near Drumlish, Co. Longford) in Co. Leitrim, which also makes sense of Thomas Cox's attendance at the nearby Longford fair].
