Williamson Letters
Title
Robert Williamson, Ahory, County Armagh, to his brother, William Williamson, California, no date [but likely in late 1853 or early 1854]
Description
Pages missing. Photocopied ms., not transcribed; the only notes are these below. Provides news of family and/or old neighbors at home and in Belvidere, Illinois. A friend has three sons in the American army, but this does not seem to be a reference to the Civil War. Robert reports that many families were emigrating to New Zealand and Australia, and that the newspapers were predicting that emigration to America would cease. [Robert also informed William of family news including the marriage of their sister Catherine — who is thinking of emigrating with her husband and their six children. This letter is evidently written during the building of the Newry railway, 1853-1855 (which is referenced by Robert) and before William's letter home of 18 June 1854 where he confirms his wife is in Sacramento].
