Williamson Letters
Title
William Williamson, New York City, to his brother, Hugh Williamson, Ahory, Richhill, County Armagh, 22 May 1843
Description
Mostly a fairly interesting voyage letter; the voyage was remarkable for being so short (21 days, 8 hours), but the ship's food was terrible; even the bread was inedible. William met old neighbors in New York City, including his Peebles cousins. Was soon going to Albany en route to Illinois. Ask whether his brothers John and Ben were following him to New York or going to Upper Canada. Asks whether his brother James should be apprenticed in Ireland before he, too, emigrates. Praises New York City for its prosperity and the beauty of its natural situation.
