Ferral Letters
Title
John Ferral to James Buchanan, [3 December 1856]
Description
[This letter is written by Ferral (recovering from a fever) on Dec 3rd, '56 from Sonara, Tuolumne Co. to president-elect Buchanan (presumably in Pennsylvania though the letter is not explicit in this)]. Referring to Buchanan as "The Workingman's Friend", Ferral happily informs him of the Canadian government's scheme to grant solvent but landless would-be settlers 100 acre farms in "three large and superior districts", which some Americans have taken up. Ferral refers to canvassing difficuties he had in getting French or Italians to vote for the Democrats, in the mining districts until they realised he was Irish. He discusses the partisan sides immigrant communities took over "the Dillon affair" and noted that "No intelligent foreign born citizen is fairly treated by American born generally, of any party". It is clear that Ferral's support of Buchanan while wholehearted, is conditional on the latter's political success and uniting the "whole union of the United States', while reforming of the "curse of Landlordism".
