Fields and Flood Letters
Title
Anne Flood, New York City, to her mother and siblings, Creevagh townland, Kilskeer parish, County Meath, 2 June 1853
Description
Very good advice letter, although torn and difficult to read. Anne Flood urges her widowed mother to not stay in Ireland paying rent, but to emigrate while her family still has some money left. Otherwise, when they leave Ireland (as eventually they will have to do, regardless), they'll be so poor that won't be able to bring any capital to America and they'll be dependent on their daily labor for survival. Anne dreams about her mother constantly, but won't send her remittances, for fear that will encourage her to postpone emigration. "Keep up your courage; if Creevagh fails, America will not, and I hope in God your happiest days is to come yet." She consoles her mother on the death of Catherine (her sister?) at home. Sends news of Bridget and Ann Caffrey: the latter is now "a fine girl and a real Yankee" since she got employment as a sales clerk in a dry goods store. Bridget still plans to send passage money to sister Rose.
