Anderson-Waters Letters
Title
George Anderson, New York City, to his brother, James Anderson, Ballymaguire, Arboe parish, County Tyrone, [2]8 June 1833
Description
Writer is an unhappy, unskilled laborer, who is bitter because his father gave him neither money nor training in a marketable skill before packing him off to America. Letter compares the condition of skilled immigrants in America with his own plight: he's now plunged him into a harsher reality than he was provided for. Immigrants are pouring in from all countries. No cholera in New York, fortunately, but it was raging in New Orleans. His sister, Ann Jane and their cousin Ann were about to emigrate, and George urges his brother to make sure they have protection en route from "genteel persons" and that their father gives them more money than he gave him-which was none. Good letter illustrating difficulties for unskilled laborers and also the negative family dynamics sometimes involved in emigration.
