Thomas Kelly, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, to his cousin Michael Lewis Geary, Helena, Montana, 8 December 1866
Description
Thomas Kelly writes to his cousin Michael Lewis Geary that he has only now received the latter's letter a year after it was penned. He gives news on his family and friends, noting many [from parishes in south county Clare] who emigrated to "this neighbourhood". He complains of the "navvies" who arrived from England in their thousands, leading to the general lowering of wages and suspensison of the railway works due to the lack of finance which he claimed was over-used to give employment to the "hundreds who were daily arriving".
