Lalor Letters
Title
William Lalor, Syene, Wisconsin, to his brother, Richard Lalor, Tinakill, Queen's County, Valentine's Day, 1884
Description
Reports still more awful weather, and reminisces about the beautiful spring flowers in the Ireland of his youth. Excellent letter on Irish and Irish-American nationalism: Lalor expresses very strong, revolutionary Irish nationalist sentiments, but fears that most Irish people are "willing slaves and serfs" to English rule. William had heard that Richard was about to retire from Parliament, because of bad health. (In fact, Richard Lalor remained in Parliament until 1892; when the Home Rule Party split, Richard remained loyal to Parnell, but his feeble health prevented him from campaigning and he lost his seat to an anti Parnellite Home Ruler.) [The former settlement of Syene is now deserted according to 'HISTORICAL & ARCHITECTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY 2018-2019, Fitchburg (city), Dane County, Wisconsin"].
