Lalor Letters
Title
William Lalor, Syene P.O., Dane Co., Wisconsin, to his brother, Richard Lalor, Tinakill, Queen's County, 17 February 1871
Description
Lalor has had a difficult year, first nearly dying of typhoid, then severely injured by a runaway horse. Describes the terrible winter weather that seemed, judging from Lalor's and Maria O'Brien's letters, very common in Wisconsin. Expresses deep homesickness for Ireland and strong pro-Fenian and anti-clerical opinions: he is sorry that they French lost the war with Prussia, but is glad that the Italian government took over the Papal States and ended the Pope's temporal powers. Notes the welcome given in New York to the Fenian exiles (Devoy, Rossa, etc.) released from English prisons. Ends letter with "God Save Ireland." [The former settlement of Syene is now deserted according to 'HISTORICAL & ARCHITECTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY 2018-2019, Fitchburg (city), Dane County, Wisconsin"].
