Title
Andrew Richey, New York City, to his parents, Ireland, 11 April 1836
Description
Writing from New York where he is purchasing a years' supply of goods for their Mississippi market, on his only second visit to the city since his arrival in America in 1829, Andrew Richey informs his parents that he is now a full partner in business with his brother James. He explains how they purchase goods on the 12 month credit system as "a person's credit here is governeed as much by his business qualifications & integrity as it is by his Capital". His describes that winter as the most severe the North has experienced in some time, with the Ohio river being frozen for two or three months. Richey predicts that travelling in a few years will be "remarkably expeditious & very cheap" with the great many railroads being built throughout the country. When they left Kentucky, Andrew reports that James did not make as much clear profit when all was settled and the former hopes that "if God spares us our health" they "will make something considerable" in Mississippi, where their business is good. Richey concludes with news of aquaintances and family while wishing he could see his family in person again.
