Love Letters
Title
John Love, Banbridge, County Down, to his son, Robert Love, Petersburg, Virginia, 19 November 1821
Description
Despite John Love's religiosity, his letter reveals his contemptuous reaction to the camp meeting revival, in or near Petersburg, which Robert evidently had described in a lost letter. Revealingly, John Love condemns religious revivals as over-emotional and disorderly-as full of "folly and nonsense"-as occasions where men, and especially women, lose self-control. Interesting, also, in that John asks his son for a $100 loan, so he can complete the "improvements," which his landlord insists he make. Reports also that Robert's sister, Prudence, intends to open a milliner's shop.
