John Love, Banbridge, County Down, to his son, Robert Love, Petersburg, Virginia, 9 August 1821
Description
This is a very lengthy parental advice letter, partly concerning the " loyalty" issues which Robert raised in his 9 June 1821 letter: i.e., whether to join a volunteer company. John also strongly discourages Robert's courtship and possible marriage, as detrimental to his economic prospects. Classic bourgeois advice, urging hard work and deferred gratification : don't waste time on volunteer companies or singing societies; don't think about women; be cautious and frugal; and focus on God. Apparently, Robert seems to have played well the role of dutiful son, reliant on constant parental guidance.
