Love Letters
Title
Robert Love, Petersburg, Virginia, to his parents, Banbridge, County Down, 9 June 1821, [addressed to John Love]
Description
Very interesting letter about Robert Love's business, social and religious life in Petersburg: he attends church and Sunday School faithfully, and also participates in a singing society, but in part to court a young woman — although he reassures his father than he has no plans to marry for a long time. Claims that his habits are reformed, and that he is happy and hard-working in his employer's store. Perhaps the most interesting part of the letter is Robert's discussion of the question of immigrant loyalties: whether he should join an American volunteer militia company, despite his refusal to ever fight against Great Britain, to which he avows permanent loyalty, and his reluctance to become a US citizen.
