[John] Mulligan, New York City, to [his brother?] William Mulligan, Brague, Banbridge, County Down, 18 August 1819
Description
Very interesting letter from a Presbyterian minister and teacher in Flatbush Academy on Long Island. Mulligan claimed that the Americans had greater respect for clergymen than did people in Ulster. Apparently, William wants to pursue a "literary career" in America, but John urges him to postpone emigration until he acquires more education and gentility, because Americans were much better educated and more sophisticated than people at home believed. John reports that he has preached several times in America to different denominations-"Seceders, Presbyterians, Dutch Reformed" -which he says would be considered "heretical" in Banbridge. [Brague now Brague Rd. in Ballinaskeagh, Banbridge].
