Wray Letters
Title
John Wray, Hide Park, New York, to his brother, Thomas Wray, care of Daniel O'Kane, Coleraine, County Derry, 3 April 1817
Description
John Wray writes home to his family that he has settled in well since arriving from Ireland, after his "very rough passage" of twenty-seven days sailing which they expereinced "either a calm or a storm". He describes New York as very poor, with business "very dull" so he went 100 miles north to "Hide park" by steamboat and now teaches in a neighbouring school for good wages, equal to £50 a year. Wray notes that the local people were "nearly all dutch" who had a "great Enmity to the Irish for the [sic] think that the [sic] are Drunken Quarrelling sort of people". He believes that while "money is not so easy as people imagine", if a man works hard and "you conduct yourself well [...] you will be respected". He states that he is happy in this country "which is not oppressed with taxes as the [sic] are in Ireland" while looking forward to making a success of his venture there and "make a recompense for my past conduct". He asks that his family do not 'let dissent between you" even as they live together. Wray concludes that he called on David Graham from Coleraine "concerning money that he is owed you" and requests further instruction on how to proceed, as Graham 'was displeased" even though "has a good school and lives in Great splendor".
