Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Letter from Jonathan Smyth to his father James Smyth, and family, Moycraig, County Antrim, 15 November 1846; 'Per Steamer from Boston'
Description
Jonathan Smyth writes to his parents from "Friends Asylum" having left his position because "there was so much drinking going on" and now working there with Archie McKay for $12 monthly and having little do do but "we are very close confined and have some hard fights, but it takes him and me to clear the decks". He understands his parents may not be happy as to how he conducted himself regarding his late brother's property but that the "set of common robbers" had defeated him in court regarding its dispersal [which apparently included his widow, as Jonathan warns his mother not to write to her]. He concludes by admonishing his brother James and the trouble he is giving their parents, telling him "Let him act the man; take his child, leave it wth you and I will support it; and let him come out to the country and do for himself'.
