Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Robert Smyth, Philadelphia, to his brother William Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim; in care of Mr D. McKay, postmaster, Moss-side, County Antrim, 1 May 1842
Description
Robert W. Smyth responds with thanks to his elder brother's first letter to him and hope there will be more while he remains in America. He does not want any of his family to come to there "lest you should act like my brother James and leave a stain on the family", who returned home to Ireland without a word to Robert. The latter claims "it was the best thing he could do to go home for he is not fit for anything but the spade or the plough. He is a bog-trotter". He also advised William not to selll his land to a stranger as "I can pay you for it at any time". However, Robert reports that despite anticipating a good harvest with good weather, they are enduring a banking crisis with six city banks failing and his uncle William losing £200 as a result. His aunt is expected to die from consumption after a long illness but also having "always troubling herself and all around her". Smyth concludes by giving news of friends and family including cousin John White and family who were well and asks after acquaintances at home.
