Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Robert Smyth, Liverpool, to James Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim; in care of the Moss-side Postmaster, 18 April 1841
Description
Robert W. Smyth recounts from Liverpool port his voyage back to America since he parted from his parents on 15 April, where all the ship's passengers were sea-sick before they had reached the Giants Causeway, except Robert himself and James Scott. He advises them to inform cousin Robert White that "I stop in the single young man['s] lodger" and that their ship "the North America" is due to sail to Philadelphia on 19 April — for which he paid £4 "in the second cabin which is a place for ourselves. We had to pay 4s.6d. each of head money". Smyth reports that his brother Robert now understands from the "disagree-ableness of being at sea" why he had discouraged him from travelling to America and would return home if his pasage had not been paid.
