Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
James Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim to Robert Smyth, Lombard Street and 12th Street, Philadelphia, 1 June 1840
Description
James Smyth expresses his surprise to have received his son Robert's letter from the returning James Scott (who smuggled home some food articles) and hoped Robert was not afflicted with the disease which afflicts Scott, while looking forward to his son's visit home. He also reports that Robert's brother, John, made a cart for them and helps them with chores, while spending the remaining time with neighbours. Aside from other local and family news, James asks his son to seek out news of David Hamilton, for Robert McCurdy, as "he is the life of his lease in the Whins" and has been noticed out by Mr Leslie if he cannot sastify Hamilton being alive. He concludes to be happy that Robert was alive and well even if "his brotherly friendship is dead long ago".
