Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Robert Smyth to James Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim, 17 June 1839
Description
While taking advantage of the imminent return of Richard Scott from "this port" to Liverpool, Robert Smyth writes to his parents with little to report except that Scott's health was so bad he was advised to emigrate for Europe by his friends. Smyth reflects that the spring season was good, with plenty employment and the report of war between America and Great Britain is as it was when peace was proclaimed following the War of Independence. He is also perturbed that his family only received two letters since his arrival, as he had written "six or seven". He recounts news of more friends who had emigrated including the McFaddens and sends some presents home to his friends and siblings. However, Smyth would not advise his friends to come to America "to hard work", and while "money is not contentment" he will not return home empty-handed.
