Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
Robert Smyth, Philadelphia to James Smyth, Moycraig, County Antrim, 3 August 1837
Description
Robert Smyth writes to his family on his "not very pleasant" passage to America since leaving Londonderry on 3 June, without fair winds while accompanied by swells and a terrible storm. He reported "scarcely a day without a fight or night without a robbery" on board the ship, before landing in Philadelphia on 27 July. He reports times are hard there, but that he likes his uncle and aunt well and he lives "in a well furnished house as your landlord". Smyth sends his love to all at home and gives the news of friends and relations in America and that he intends visiting his uncle Robert Smyth who "lives up in the northern liberties".
