Smith/ Smyth Letters
Title
William Smith [Lombard Street and 12th Street] Philadelphia, to his brother, James Smith, Moycraig, County Antrim, 18 October 1836
Description
William Smith laments news of Jonathan's death and reports his "distillery and wholesale liquor business" is very successful and offers accommodation at his "well furnished" home for James Smith's son Robert, or any of his family, if they come to America. He did this for John McCurdy — "a very good young man" — who Smyth reports he also employed in his business. Smyth declares that while he bought his house and lot for $2500 and is now offered $3000 for it, he had to endure many losses since leaving Ireland. Yet he prevailed and has a good standing in society with his wife and children ("not 2 smarter or handsomer children in the world I think"). Smyth advises his brother to do as James Montgomery did and purchase a farm for $1200, if he intends "coming out here" but warns him and his children from moving, "as there are so many that does bad here".
