Daniel T. Shehan, Toronto, Canada West, to his parents, Ballylongford, County Kerry, 4 October 1841
Description
Shehan's "forth [fourth]" letter to his parents, describing his passage to Kingston and his experience there. He notes the numerous tradesmen and labourers there who can get good wages but with "hundreds of poor emmegrant hear" also. He advised that Quebec, followed by Montreal, are the best places in Canada for Irish emigrants. After three days he moved on to Toronto with Margaret but had difficulty getting work as the residents "dont like Strangers" but noted his diet was good "far better than white poteatoes [potatoes] and yourself are aware of what followed them and indeed So am I too".
