Title
Owen O'Callaghan, Philadelphia, to his brother, Thomas O'Callaghan, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 12 December 1884
Description
Very good on Irish immigrant assimilation: one of his sisters, Maggie, has become a "regular Yank", so that one could scarcely tell she was not a native. Excellent on Irish Catholic temperance and beneficial societies in Philadelphia; also on the current, pervasive labour disputes and strikes there. Laments the heavy emigration from the Kilmacthomas area, especially given the sharp reductions in employment during the prevailing winter months. Remarks on evictions and Land League activities in southeast Munster; also mentions horses, horse-racing, and fox-hunting at home.
