Title
Owen O'Callaghan, Belmont, Philadelphia, to his mother Kate O'Callaghan, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 24 August [1884]
Description
Owen has moved to Belmont, a working-class suburb of Philadelphia, where he joined many other Waterford emigrants. He provides a very good description of the O'Callaghan siblings' jobs, social life, housing, and general contentment. Owen himself was working as a blacksmith's assistant in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, but plans to return to the locomotive works in winter. He reports that brother Patrick came to Philadelphia after his discharge from the U.S. Army; however, although he was very temperate in his habits, Patrick only stayed two weeks and then left for San Francisco. Patrick is glad that his parents are purchasing a "reaping machine," because farm labourers are scarce at home.
