Title
Owen O'Callaghan, Philadelphia, to his brother, Thomas O'Callaghan, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 27 May 1884
Description
His sister Maggie has now emigrated and joined Owen and Bridget in Philadelphia; she's working as a servant. Owen contrasts the paucity of "fun" in Philadelphia to the richer social life in Ireland, with its fairs, nightly visits to neighbours' houses, etc. But Owen's letter describes in detail the emigrants' efforts to maintain or reconstitute some of those dense networks of kin and former neighbours in America. His letters mention dozens of relatives and other Waterford people throughout the US, and he reports having advertised for other "missing friends" in the newspapers.
