Title
Owen O'Callaghan, Philadelphia, to his father, Owen O'Callaghan Senior, and his sister, Maggie, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 5 December 1883
Description
Reports that his cousin, Stannie (Patrick S. O'Callaghan), has joined himself and sister Bridget in Philadelphia. Reports also that brother Patrick sent $12.00 from Minnesota to help Stannie. Reports that he is fortunate to have a steady job, but that, in general, Philadelphia is "not what it used to be": high winter unemployment, and no one can get work except through "a good deal of influence" or luck. Laments Patrick O'Donnell's conviction for murdering James Carey, but would expect nothing else from an English judge and jury; hopes that O'Donnell will not be hanged (he was). Also mentions "trouble" with the Orangemen in Ireland - perhaps a reference to the riots/pogroms in Belfast?
