Title
Patrick Callaghan, Battery F, Fourth Artillery, U.S. Army, Fort Snelling, Minnesota, to his sister Maggie Callaghan, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 14 May 1883
Description
Notes that his siblings, Owen and Bridget, were scheduled to leave Ireland on 6 May 1883, bound for Philadelphia. Patrick's advice to them focuses on what Owen and Bridget should do after their arrival in America: advises that they remain together, settle in one place and not roam about, although Patrick admits that he has not followed his own advice. Patrick comments on the harsh weather and working conditions in America, and promises to send money to Owen and Bridget, and to join them as soon as his five-year Army enlistment expires. Patrick remarks strongly on the hardships endured by American soldiers. He also mentions the recent Irish-American nationalist convention in Philadelphia, and hopes it will lead to Irish revolution and independence.
