Patrick Callaghan, Fort Warren, Boston,Massachusetts, to his brother, Owen Callaghan, Fallow, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, 14 July 1882
Description
Owen is planning emigration to Worcester, Massachusetts (state), but Patrick discourages his brother Owen from emigrating—writes that he hates to see anyone leave Ireland—unless Owen has a definite promise of help and job from someone in America whom he can trust. However, Patrick promises to give all the advice and financial assistance he can to Owen and to any other siblings who come to America. Notes that their sister, Bridget, is now working in Dungarvan, Waterford (county), perhaps as a servant or dairymaid. Also mentions Michael Davitt’s land nationalisation scheme in Ireland; hopes that Irish farmers will embrace it.
