Acknowledges receipt of letter of May 12, "conveying to me the sorrowful intelligence of the demise of my Sister Bella in Lpool. words cannot express the burthen of grief the sad news has imposed upon me, but to the inscrutible ways of Him who gave us life, when He thinks proper we must submit, as you remark: 'I hope she is gone to a better world.' '' Letter reveals difficulty an emigrant had in collecting money due from Ireland; a relative of Francis' was ''tired waiting'' and offered ''the 3d of the claim for collecting same,'' "I am sorry you are out of employment, and cannot say how you might succeed in this Country at present, as it ls certain this Country has not entirely recovered from the collapse of two years ago, I know it was heavily felt in New York and all large cities but in regard to your business my Bro. Robert Francis could inform you, and no doubt could assist you in getting a situation, you should write to him for his advice, I am away from the bustle of business and nkow little about it now, it is some twenty one years since I was in N.Y. City, and Nineteen years since I saw my Bro. Robert, where I am theire is nothing known of the linen bus. what we boast of most here is raising corn and Pork, wheat, oats & hay, and when we in dulge with the luxuries of life we have to import, of which we are abundantly supplied in Dubuque City, 26 miles from here,'' Francis reported that he had just returned from "our 'Protestant Episcopal Convention,' held last week in Cedar Rapids ... '', where a new bishop was elected for the diocese. ''I was one of the Committee drew up the protest against the manner and election of Rev'd Eccleston of Philadelphia'' [Context provided by Professor Kerby A. Miller] According to information from Schrier, Francis was a member of the Church of Ireland, and a medical doctor, who emigrated to the United States in the early 18501. By 1879, he had been in Cascade, Iowa, over twenty years practicing medicine.
