Reverend William Stavely Letters
Title
Mary Adams, Monticello, near Charleston, South Carolina, to Mrs. William J. Stavely, Corkey, Loughguile parish, near Ballymoney, County Antrim, 17 February 1818
Description
Expresses dismay at Ireland's general misery but also over some kind of dispute or economic burden or "embarrassment" that she or her family seems to have imposed on the Stavelys. She promises to send remittances, but notes that the Southern economy was tied entirely to cotton harvests and prices, and so she would not have money to send until later in the year. Urges her Irish relatives to emigrate, and praises US prosperity and progress-all based on high cotton prices (prior to the Panic of 1819 and the subsequent depression, when cotton prices would plummet. She laments her dependence on the Bones family, because she seems caught in some kind of feud between them and other Irish relatives, the Cathcarts. The conflict may be over money or past bad treatment of the Adams family by the Cathcarts, but religious disputes between Covenanters and mainstream Presbyterians also seem involved .
