Letter from Jimmy Cleary to his mother while interned during the Civil War
Description
Letter from Jimmy Cleary to his mother while interned during the Civil War to his mother, dated 26, ?, 1922. Discusses morale in the camp and rumours surrounding a failed ambush carried out by ‘[Thomas Baby] Duggan and their column [Castlegar IRA]’: ‘We are a bit better since Duggan and Gargan came in. We have drill and exercise every morning for an hour and half in the three yards.’ ‘Duggan and them were caught soft, that soft that it was not their fault. It was a pity though as the column was just getting strong, ex-soldiers and others there.’ ‘No need to tell you Duggan did not ask them not to shoot him as the paper said. Tell Tommy to look after the talk that is going around about their release. Write to the paper. I can’t say more now.’
